In the book, “Lia Lee” tells a story about her family and how it is affected by an illness, Lennox Gastaut Syndrome which turns out to be a severe form of epilepsy called such because patients have different types(Gastault or complex)of seizures that usually happen at certain times related to what they eat like dinner time attack typically happens between six p.m – midnight while hyperkinetic type can strike anytime during waking hours but often associated with.

There are many other medicines available now compared to decades ago but still, not everyone gets along well- some believe you should try a natural cure first.

A lack of understanding about the traditional Hmong lifestyle and culture leads to misunderstandings, which in turn lead to miscommunications about medical dosages.

This creates an inability on behalf of the doctors trying to understand how Lia’s condition worsens with time when she resists taking medicine due to her distrust or has behavioral side effects from previous administration at higher doses than what was prescribed by physicians unfamiliar with their tradition-based niche population whose members are largely vegetarian Buddhists who abstain completely from smoking cigarettes because it is believed that this practice damages health over long term periods.

Such an amazing book. Even though it was written so long ago, it is still very relevant. As a Hmong American myself, I can definitely relate to the stories in this book. My heart goes out to Lia’s family, and my medical background also helped me to fully understand the medical team at MCMC. This book was heartbreaking and it definitely leaves the reader wondering what happened to both ends. Not realizing I was reading my last page, I was very sad to find out there was no more to read. I highly recommend this book to those who want to to learn more about the Hmong culture and to those who are just taking what they have for granted.
This was a required book for a psych nursing class. I quite enjoyed it overall and have read it twice now (once for class and once out of class). The author has a unique way of writing, where a couple of chapters talk about the family and then a couple chapters talk about the history of the Hmong people; I will admit about halfway through the book that started to annoy me as I wanted to know what happened with the family, so I went through and found/read the chapters on them, and then went back and found/read the history chapters. Probably not what the author or my instructor intended, but I still retained all the info and got 100% of the test questions on this book correct.
A real eyeopener to the Hmong culture, the treatment of epilepsy and the various views of medical staff and caregivers. I was drawn to this book because I have a child who has had seizures. Learning the viewpoint of another culture toward epilepsy gave me greater understanding on facing such a disability. It was unsettling to realize the different approaches to treatment and how cultural differences were/are not always recognized (to the benefit of the patient and their family). This was not an enjoyable book to read, but it was also not easy to put down. I hope that more recently cultural awareness in medical staff and caregivers has been recognized and is being put to use.
