The Scarlet Letter: Novel Overview:
The Scarlet Letter is a novel by Nathaniel Hawthorne that was published in 1850. In Boston, Massachusetts, the story introduces several characters, including Hester Prynne and her illegitimate daughter Pearl.
The story follows Hester Prynne’s life after being publicly humiliated for committing adultery with an unknown man, who turns out to be a minister, Arthur Dimmesdale.
The novel is known for using The Scarlet Letter A as symbolism for Hester Prynne’s adultery.
The symbol was meant to cause pain and shame rather than be used as a mark of pride (Selincourt). The letter “A” can be seen on her clothes almost everywhere and becomes an iconic image synonymous with the book.
The setting, Puritan Boston in the 17th century, has always been fascinating to me, and I believe it makes this story all the better.
The religious undertone that prevails throughout much of this novel provides us with an idea of how people lived during this period and their values.
