Novella Overview

The story’s events take place in the Mexican town of La Paz, Baja California Sur, and start with a description of the ideal family life of the poor pearl fisherman Kino, his wife Juana, and their newborn son Coyotito.

One day Kino sees as Coyotito sleeps but witnesses a scorpion crawl down the rope that keeps the hanging box where he sleeps.

Kino tries to get the scorpion, but Coyotito jolts the rope, and the scorpion drops onto him and stings.

Accompanied by their neighbors, Juana and Kino see the doctor, who declines to treat Coyotito because Kino cannot pay enough money.

The doctor holds racist views towards the poor Amerindians.
