Chekhov is a writer who, in addition to putting you right there as a witness to what is going on, but with great understanding as to what the characters are experiencing. In other words, you are not just reading as a spectator, you are truly involved. Plus, I might add, you will not be bored with the story line because it is outdated. It’s many of the same stories that go on today, only in a different time. Wash a dog, brush a dog, comb a dog and it’s still a dog. The same with humans… when you get right down to it, they are still humans with all the wants, desires and emotions that humans have.
Chekov is indeed that master of the short story. While ‘The Lady With the Dog was excellent’ I found ‘An Anonymous Story’ to be the best in this collection.
