Chapman suggests that to discover another person’s love language, one must observe how they express love to others and analyze what they complain about most often and what they request from their significant other.

He theorizes that people tend to naturally give love in the way they prefer to receive love. Better communication between couples can be accomplished by demonstrating caring to the other person in the love language the recipient understands. 

An example will be if a husband’s love language is acts of service. He may be confused when he does the laundry, and she doesn’t perceive that as an act of love, viewing it as simply performing household duties because the love language she comprehends is words of affirmation. 

She may try to use what she values, words of affirmation, to express her love, which he would not appreciate as much as she does.

If she understands his love language and mows the lawn for him, he perceives it in his love language as an act of expressing her love for him; likewise, if he tells her he loves her, she values that as an act of love.

Oh my gosh! I fell so in love with this book. It drew me in and I read it in under 2 days. I am going to reread it again. I am also looking forward to purchasing the love languages of children also by Gary Chapman. If applied, this book will change your life. You find out so much about yourself and others. The methods in which the love languages are applied to our everyday lives is essential. I have been recommending this book to everyone I know. I first came across this when someone told me about it and I went online and took the quiz to learn my languages. That then pulled me into buying and reading the book. I am not a reader whatsoever but would read any book by Gary Chapman. I am even looking at going to a conference if he is holding close to me in the near future.
I have the book for married couples and sometimes felt like I wanted more information on each individual love language. This version seems to have more detail in my opinion. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and plan to talk about it at a church event. It really is helpful to learn your love language and the love language of those around you. Putting what you learn into practice will improve your relationships.
I had read the 5 love languages when I was married and it was a good book, but although I had the tools not all things could be fixed with knowledge. After my divorce, I picked up this book, and it is very different than the married edition. It was great, there were so many different perspectives for singles that really helped. What I was surprised about, was how this book would help me not with my own romantic relationships, but how I helped me build my relationship with my daughter who is 14. She is struggling to feel loved and I was trying to show her love the way I knew how, but it was not talking to her. Understanding how people love languages had been shaped by their relationships with their parents, helped me understand what I needed to do to fix my relationship with my daughter and help her understand how much I loved her in a way she could understand.
