Novel Overview

In Ohio, Nine-year-old Claudia MacTeer and her elder sister Frieda live with their parents, a renter named Mr Henry, and Pecola Breedlove, a foster child whose house was burned down by her unstable, sexually abusive and alcoholic father.

Pecola is a reserved, quiet young girl who grows up with little money and whose parents are regularly fighting, both physically and verbally.

The novel is narrated from Claudia MacTeer’s point of view. She is the daughter of Pecola’s foster parents at varying stages in her life. In addition, there is an all-knowing third-person account that includes inset narratives in the first person.
