Short Story Description

This story is narrated by an unnamed narrator, who punishes his beloved black cat, who is his favorite, for biting him one night by chopping off its eye and hanging it from a tree. The house burns down, but a charred image of a cat hanging from a noose is still visible on one wall.

He quickly discovers a second black cat that is nearly identical to the first one—aside from a white spot on its chest—but he too quickly grows to detest it. His wife prevents him from killing the cat with an axe, so the narrator kills her instead. In his basement, he hides the body behind a brick wall.
