I purchased this as an adventure for my first attempt as a DM with a group of my friends. I’ve read through most of the book and the adventure seems well laid out with plenty of options to modify as you go. The story hook is compelling so players will be motivated to play until completion. I expect it will also leave them wanting to play the second adventure “The Rise of Tiamat” immediately after completing this one. I know I’m looking forward to running the campaign.
Not sure why there is so much hate toward this campaign book. It’s a fantastic module and a great way for players to dip their feet into something larger if they have finished the starter set. I can see how more experienced players used to crafting their own adventure would be underwhelmed, but to be honest, if you’re buying a premade campaign book with a beginning and an end, there’s gonna be some railroading if you’re to hit all the highlights. As a DM, my group of somewhat new players has loved running this campaign and we just started the second book, Rise of Tiamat. The book itself is well made, has fantastic visuals, and is presented well. I thoroughly recommend it to any DM or group that is interested in a “Classic” D&D story. Especially if your players are fairly new to D&D.
At first, I was going to write words of praise to WotC for this product, but then I remembered that WotC was more the publisher of it. The real credit for this book goes out to Kobold Press. This up-and-coming company has hit a home run with its writing and it is no wonder they were the ones WotC had writing for them. KP really nailed a great module. The story is simple, and the adventure is packed full of action. One of the things I love about this product is that it can be converted to other editions with relative ease (the only thing WotC has done right so far since publishing 4e). If you play Pathfinder and use Forgotten Realms, this module should be on your to-get list. It is well written and shines in a sea of questionability darkness that the core rule books are swimming in right now.
