Ghost of Saltmarsh is a great 5E D&D offering. Wizards have stepped up the artwork and production value over the last 5E module I bought, and it’s a great looking book. The cover art is so much better than their usual committee-approved drek. By fleshing out the areas around the location of the first module, Wizards added a lot of support for campaigning, especially in Greyhawk. Although pithy, the Greyhawk-centric lore adds a nice touch, mainly because it is faction based rather than a big info dump. I don’t have any of the U-modules in my library (I looked), but from my memory, the 5E conversion is faithful to the original, and any added material is present to support the added campaign area content.
Well I bought this for a pirate campaign and it is an excellent resource for gaining a “flavor” for some 5e piracy shenanigans. I have used the adventures mostly for inspiration but most of the modules seem legit and I hope to incorporate the final higher level adventure into the campaign. The details on ships and sailing is good, I fleshed it out with Seas of Vodari, which polishes the ship rules to a shine. Lots of fun, good tone. I do wish there were more ship’s rules, tables, and charts, but grab a PDF of Seas of Vodari and you’re good to go!
I’m overall very happy with this purchase. I was incredibly surprised at how quickly I received the book, and it arrived in good condition. Though, I admit I probably don’t notice binding issues like some of the other reviewers here. I will say that I’m very happy with the contents of this book as well. It contains a lot of different things, all very useful to DMs in my opinion. While not necessarily a comprehensive, all-inclusive book, it does contain enough material and examples for a DM to run with and create a great game. A handful of great adventures any DM can plop into their games when they see fit, good variety amongst the types of adventures, and the additional rules, backgrounds, random tables, etc are very useful. I highly recommend Ghost of Saltmarsh.
