Madame Mathilde Loisel was born into a lower-class family, but she always assumed herself an aristocrat. She always wished to live a lavish lifestyle and cursed her poor financial status.

Her husband, Loisel tries his best to make her happy, but the Clerk’s low paying job doesn’t allow him to provide all the luxuries of life that his wife wishes for.

One day, he brings an invitation to a party organized by the Ministry of Education and tells Madame Loisel about it, expecting that this would make her happy.

Instead, she gave a cold response by bluntly refusing to go to the party because for the party she had nothing decent to wear. Loisel gives her all of his savings to buy a dress for the party, but her wife remains unhappy because she had no jewelry to wear with the dress.

Then after a discussion with her husband, she decided to borrow a diamond necklace from her friend Madame Jeanne Forestier.
